Episode 2 – Home Food Vs. Packaged Food

Hi Kryon Team,

We’ve just adopted a 3 month old indie pup, Margot.

All her vaccinations are now complete. But we’re very confused about what to feed her. Everyone seems to have a different opinion. I consulted 2 vets and they both suggested different food options. I’m so confused, so here is my list of questions:

  • Should I cook for my pet or buy ready-made food?
  • Does my pet enjoy what I feed him?
  • According to my fur baby’s age, how many times do I feed her?

Margot and we are looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Thank Woof.

Hi Margot and Family,

Thank you for sending in your queries.

When it comes to food, these are the questions that unite all pet parents.

First thing to remember is, like humans, dogs too need different foods according to the stage of life e.g. a pup’s diet is different to that of a 3 year old adult dog. The good health of your pet depends on a balanced and nutritious diet. That is the desire of every pet owner irrespective of whether they feed home or ready-made food.

Q.1) Should I cook for my pet or buy ready-made food?

Dogs prefer fresh food like humans as compared to packaged food. Good quality, nutritious home-cooked food is good for you and for your dog
One can always cook fresh food and freeze it for the week. It makes our lives much easier.

  • When you cook for your pet, you are aware of what your dog likes and needs.  You are also able to ensure that only the best ingredients go into the recipe.
  • Also you become aware of any allergies that your dog has and accordingly alter the recipes.

Packaged food is expensive but saves a lot of time and energy. Also, if you don’t like cooking meat, buying meat flavored packaged food, is easy and hassle free.

  • The primary ingredients in pet food are byproducts of meat, poultry, and seafood, feed grains, and soybean meal. According to the pet food industry, meat can come from virtually any mammal. So, generic meat meal can be legally made from road kill, dead, diseased or dying farm animals — even euthanized cats and dogs.
  • Commercially made pet food is not designed for the needs of your pet alone.  It is made for the general population. However it is best to go through the ingredients on the packaged food in detail, research and check for yourself the effect they have on our pets.
In today’s times, there are multiple options of Pet Tiffin’s and Doggie Dabbas readily available.

Helpful Healthy Information

D)   Oils
Adding a teaspoon of oil to their diet is good for dogs.
Fish oil, coconut oil and flaxseed oil (cold pressed) are the most beneficial.

E)    Chlorophyll
Adding small amounts of chlorophyll to their food via green leafy vegetables can help especially in digestion.
Ideally these should be given raw and sprinkled over the dog’s food (once washed & cleaned properly).

F)    Snacks
Healthy snacks are sweet potato, peanut butter (in moderate quantity), baked fat free and sugar dog treats

Items NOT suitable for pets:

  • Salt, Onions, garlic, mushrooms, broccoli, chocolate, cocoa, dark chocolate, cooking spices, chili’s, pickle and alcohol
  • Grapes, avocados and seeds of fruits e.g apple are toxic for dogs.
  • Always remove the seeds from any fruits and vegetables before feeding it to your pet

Be aware: Please check online or with your vet before introducing a new fruit.

Q.2) Does my pet enjoy what I feed him?

Aah the eternal question that every pet parent wants to know –

Some simple ways to know the food isn’t up to their liking are:

  • If you know she’s hungry, but is refusing to eat the food served for more than 2 days, try changing it and see.
  • Observe her coat, if it’s dry and coarse
  • Her Poop is smelly and diarrhea like
Remember any diet on which your dog fails to thrive is a poor choice. If you see that your dog is not doing well on what you’re feeding him, consider a change. He/ She will thank you for it.

Now enjoy this bonding process with Margot, find new recipes and most importantly have fun.

Q.3) According to my fur baby’s age, how many times do I feed her?

  • One and a half months – three months: around 4 small meals a day.
  • Three months – six months: 3 meals a day
  • Six months onwards: 2 meals with a twelve-hour gap and a snack if required in between
As they grow older, some adult dogs like to eat only one meal a day.
A dog’s digestive system works differently from humans, so they don’t require food every few hours.
It takes 12 hours -24 hours to digest complex carbohydrates and meat.

FUN INDIE FACTS:

The Indian pariah, is also known as the South Asian pye dog and Desi Dog.

It is possible that the ancestors of this dog dates back 4,500 years ago.

Country of Origin: India.
They have erect ears, a wedge-shaped head, and a curved tail.

Temperament: Pariah dogs are very alert and social. They are easily trainable and being territorial and defensive are often used as a guard dog and police dog.

They need good socializing as pups and do well with families and children if provided with such socialization.

Being a naturally evolved breed, they have very few health concerns and thrive with minimal maintenance in suitable climates.
The skin needs very little grooming and the dogs themselves are relatively clean. They have little body odour.

Desi dogs are much more intelligent and hardy than most pedigreed dogs that people spend so much money on.
