Monsoon Care for your pet

The monsoons are not only romantic but a great time to enjoy the rejuvenation of nature.   If you take the required safety and protective measures there is no reason why cannot enjoy it with your dog.  For most dogs the monsoons means less time outdoors.   Even basic activities like relieving themselves outside become a task because pet parents have to consider many things before venturing out.   Their routine is hampered, energy is not spent and they get stressed. Prolonged stress has the same effect on your dog as it has on humans. 

Many dogs get scare of lightning and thunder.  Instead of petting them at that time the best thing to do is ignore them when they get scared of the noise. You only pet your dog when he has done something good, so you don’t want to reinforce his fear of thunder by petting and hugging him at that time. You can play soothing instrumental music instead. You can also speak to your vet for safe suppressants for the nerves if you feel he is extremely anxious. 

Keep your dog’s fur dry at all times. When moisture cannot escape from the skin’s surface, the dampness that remains becomes a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria.  Make sure that you wipe your dog dry after you come back from your walk. If you see your dog constantly licking certain body parts or scratching and if you can smell a foul odour then your dog may have a fungal or bacterial infection or allergy.  See your vet immediately.   

Check your dog’s paws as they pick up all the muck from the ground and get infected.  The market is flooded with rainy shoes and gear for dogs. It your dog has long fur, trim the fur in the paw area.  Don’t forget your dog’s ears. They too are infection prone, especially dogs with closed ears. 

 Invest in a few good quality towels.  Make sure they are super absorbent. You can also try dry shampoos.  In this damp weather, you may have to use a use a hair dryer and blow dry your dog if he’s not scared of the noise.

Give your dog a nice warm bedding.  The temperature drops and they feel the chill.  The cold can get to your dog and cause aching joints and fever.    Keep your dog’s bedding, food and water in a dry place. Avoid areas where even rain mist can seep through.  Bacteria can accumulate on the food and bedding as well. 

Don’t let the rain hamper your dog’s activities. If your dog is stressed and it is because boredom, the best way to relieve it is to spend their energy with simple things in an around the house.  Going up and down the stairs will benefit the both of you Get him some new and exciting toys and make the effort to spend more time with your dog. 

Since your pet can’t walk much, increase the fiber in your dog’s food.  His weight will be under control and the bowels will also be regular. Rain or shine, you can make things work with a little bit of preparation for both you and your pooch.  Have a great monsoon!!!
