Meal Timings and Weight Loss

Should you just eat when your tummy lets you know or establish a regular eating timetable for your meals and snacks?

Let’s look at both options:

  1. If you wait till your stomach rumbles to eat then you may be so hungry that you’ll pretty much eat anything. This usually results in overeating and weight gain. When our blood sugar drops fairly low, we tend to grab any and all food we can get our hands on.
  2. If you’re rigid about eating at a certain hour, you might begin eating out of habit instead of hunger. This means you’re taking in calories even if your body isn’t asking you for them, which can lead to weight gain. Paying more attention to the timing may mean paying less attention to the natural hunger signals or ignoring them all together.

Both have their pros and cons.

So it’s not about eating when your stomach growls or at fixed timings.

What’s important is listening to your body telling you when it would like food and when it’s full.

If you are relaxed, eating slowly and enjoying your food then you will be better tuned in with your body and its messages.

Each one’s body might give different answers; there is no right or wrong.

Example: Puneet used to eat only 3 meals a day and was still overweight. Now after listening to his body, he eats 6 small meals a day.  His weight has come down tremendously and he has never felt better.

Deepa ‘s dietician had told her that she needs to eat 5-6 meals a day to reduce her weight. After tuning in to her body she began eating  2 main meals a  day and  at other times snacked on fruit and salad. She  has now lost  all her excess weight and feels energetic and happy.

Ultimately, you need to listen carefully to your body. Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full. No one strategy is perfect for every single person. Choose the strategy that is the best fit for you and your lifestyle.
