Episode 3 – To Leave Or Not To Leave Your Pet Home Alone?

Being trainers and animal communicators, we get asked this question A LOT!

As much as we don’t like to leave our fur-babies alone, sometimes emergencies, important meetings, unforeseen circumstances just can’t be avoided. But there isn’t any need to panic or feel guilty.  With a few tweaks and adjustments we can all be happy.

So ask yourself this –

If we were to put you in a room what would you need to be comfortable?

A bed, food, water, ventilation, access to a toilet, a gadget to keep you occupied and absolutely zero chance of anything injuring you in your safe space.

Now the same goes for your pet – Fun toys to play with, a grilled and accessible window for fresh air as well as entertainment will go a long way to help keep boredom at bay.

Animals like to look outside and observe what’s happening around them. Their bed should be close by for a nap and you can leave the radio/laptop/ipad on for a bit of comfort sound. Just be sure it isn’t going to be blasting some heavy metal, calm soothing music will always be appreciated.

Animals are creatures of habit and your departure will soon be part of a daily routine. But if you want them to happily embrace this routine then ensure that they are well exercised and well fed before you leave them be.

On a daily basis a long walk before you head out will work wonders for your dog.  With his pent up energy spent, he will have a nice long nap once back home.  Keep the toilet door open for your dog.  Ample fresh water should be available the whole time.

If you plan to leave food out for him/her make sure the food you leave out shouldn’t get spoilt. You can always ask your house help, a neighbor or friend to drop by and feed your pet. See what is feasible for you.

And how long would you be happy being in this room alone?

If you are comfortable and happy, then you will be fine with being on your own for “sometime”.

Again it’s the same for your pet. Some time being the key word.

Now how much is some time?

Pups under 5 months are like babies and ideally shouldn’t be left unsupervised.
They need a lot more supervision and help with their meals so they should not be left alone for more than 40 minutes to an hour.

Older dogs from 5 months onwards can be left alone for up to maximum 4 hours at a time.
Ensure you gradually increase the timing starting from 30 minutes.

Any sudden change can cause your pet mental and emotional trauma.

What if it’s more than 4 hours on a daily basis?

If your work is going to keep you out of the house for longer than 4 hours, then it’s definitely important to look at other sustainable options such as having a house help come in to take them out for walk and feed them during the day or having a pet sitter.

Look out for a fun cage-less doggie day care place so your dog can have fun and make friends while you are at work.  Dogs love socializing with other dogs, read our blog on Socialising – https://www.wisdomcentre.co.in/episode-1-socialising/

The most important thing is to ensure that your everyday timetable includes ample quality time for your pet.
